The Shearling Leather Coat: Where Timeless Elegance Meets Ultimate Comfort

A shearling coat is the warmest piece of outerwear most people own: leather or suede on the outside and a thick shearling lining on the inside, cut long enough to cover your hips or legs. This guide explains the main styles for men and women (long, hooded, trench, B-3 and B-7), how to choose the right length, how a coat should fit over winter layers, and how to look after it.

What Is a Shearling Coat?

Shearling is sheepskin or lambskin tanned with the wool left on. In a shearling coat, the wool side is worn on the inside as the lining and shows at the collar, cuffs and hem, while the skin side becomes the outside as smooth leather or suede. A coat is longer than a shearling jacket, usually reaching the hip, thigh or knee. For the difference between the words sheepskin and shearling, see what is shearling.

Men's Shearling Coats

Long Shearling Coats

A long black shearling coat is the most useful all-round choice: it covers your suit or sweater, keeps the wind off your legs and works with both tailoring and denim. Look for an oversized collar you can turn up and deep hand-warmer pockets.

Hooded Shearling Coats

A hood makes the biggest difference in snow and wind. The long hooded sheepskin coat pairs a turn-down collar with a protective hood and a long, slim cut, so it stays warm without looking bulky.

Shearling Trench Coats

A shearling trench coat is the smartest option. The slim-fit brown aviator trench is double-breasted with a wide aviator collar and shearling-lined pockets, so it sits well over a suit. For a bolder look, the black leather long trench has a white shearling collar and a buckle front.

B-3 Aviator Coats

The B-3 was introduced in the 1930s for American bomber crews. A B-3 aviator coat keeps the buckle collar and shearling cuffs of the original but adds length for more cover. The dark brown B-3 coat has a full shearling lining, a button front and two waist pockets.

Women's Shearling Coats

Trench and Long Coats

A long trench is the most elegant shearling coat. The beige sheepskin trench is double-breasted and mid-calf length, with a contrasting black shearling-style collar and lining. The belted brown coat adds a waist belt and a large trimmed collar, which keeps a defined shape over thick layers.

B-7 Bomber Coats

B-7 coats take their shape from cold-weather flight parkas: a longer bomber body with heavy shearling trim at the collar, cuffs and hem. The beige B-7 coat is the warmest women's style here.

Asymmetric and Suede Coats

For a more fashion-led look, the light gray coat has an asymmetric zip and an oversized collar, while the black suede coat gives a softer, matte finish with a shearling-trimmed collar and a waist belt.

How to Choose the Right Length

  • Hip length (car coat, B-3): easiest to drive and sit in; best for daily commutes.
  • Thigh length (long coat, B-7): covers your hips and the top of your legs; the best all-round choice.
  • Knee to mid-calf (trench): the most cover and the smartest look; best if you walk a lot or wait outside.

How a Shearling Coat Should Fit

  • Measure over your winter layers: shearling is thick, so compare the chest with a winter coat you already own, not a light jacket.
  • Shoulders: the seams should sit at the edge of your shoulders.
  • Sleeves: long enough to cover your wrists when you reach forward.
  • Closure: the coat should button or zip over a heavy sweater without pulling.

Every coat is made to order. Most styles come in sizes XS to 5XL, some women's styles run XXS to 3XL, and custom sizing is available on every coat if you sit between sizes or want a longer sleeve or body.

Real Leather and Faux Shearling

Our coats are made in real leather or suede unless the product title says faux. The shearling collars, linings and trims are faux by default, which keeps the coat lighter and easier to care for, and real shearling is available on request, so mention it when you order.

How to Wear a Shearling Coat

  • Men, smart: long black coat or brown trench over a suit or a turtleneck and wool trousers.
  • Men, casual: B-3 coat or hooded coat with dark jeans, a heavy knit and boots.
  • Women, smart: beige trench over a knit dress with knee-high boots.
  • Women, casual: B-7 coat with straight jeans, a chunky sweater and ankle boots.

Caring for a Shearling Coat

Never machine wash a leather or shearling coat. Hang it on a broad hanger in a cool, dry place, in a breathable garment bag rather than plastic. If it gets wet, let it dry naturally at room temperature, away from radiators. Brush the collar and trims gently, condition the leather now and then, and use a specialist leather or suede cleaner for stains. Leather blocks wind and handles light snow, but a shearling coat is not waterproof.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a shearling coat warmer than a shearling jacket?

Yes. The lining is the same, but a coat covers your hips and legs, so you lose less heat. For short trips and driving, a jacket is easier; for long walks in the cold, choose a coat. For jackets, see our shearling jacket guide.

Which shearling coat is best for snow?

A hooded coat or a heavily trimmed B-7 style, worn over a thick knit. Avoid soaking rain, as shearling coats are not waterproof.

Can I wear a long shearling coat over a suit?

Yes. A long coat or a trench should reach past your suit jacket hem; size up if you plan to wear it over tailoring.

Are your coats real shearling?

The outer is real leather or suede unless the title says faux. Shearling collars, linings and trims are faux by default, and real shearling is available on request.
