The Timeless Appeal of Men's Leather Shirts

A men's leather shirt is a shirt cut from soft, thin leather, usually lambskin, sheepskin or suede, with a collar, buttons or snaps and a closer fit than a jacket. You can wear it buttoned as a shirt or open over a T-shirt as a light layer. This guide covers the main types of leather shirt, which leather to choose, how a leather shirt should fit, how it compares to a leather jacket, outfit ideas, care and our own shirts, all made to order.

What Is a Men's Leather Shirt?

A leather shirt follows the pattern of a cloth shirt: a collar, a button or snap front, cuffs and often chest pockets. The difference is the material. Shirt leather is thinner and softer than jacket leather, usually around 0.6 to 0.8 mm, so it drapes and moves like a heavy shirt. Most leather shirts are unlined or have a light lining, which keeps them comfortable against the body.

Leather shirts have been part of men's style since Western and biker clothing of the 1950s and 1970s, and they now range from simple black button-downs to suede overshirts and short-sleeved summer shirts.

Leather Shirt vs Leather Jacket

Feature Leather shirt Leather jacket
Leather Thin and soft: lambskin, sheepskin, suede Thicker: cowhide, goatskin, heavier lambskin
Lining Unlined or lightly lined Usually fully lined
Fastening Buttons or snaps Usually a zip
Fit Close to the body, over a T-shirt or on its own Room for a shirt or knit underneath
Warmth Mild days, roughly 15 to 22°C (59 to 72°F) Cool to cold days
Best for Evenings, smart-casual, layering in spring and autumn Everyday outerwear, wind and cold

A leather shirt is not a replacement for a jacket in cold weather, but it is easier to wear indoors and looks sharper with trousers. For jacket styles, see our men's biker jacket guide.

Types of Men's Leather Shirts

Classic Button-Down Leather Shirt

A standard collar, a full button front and long sleeves. It is the most useful leather shirt: wear it buttoned with trousers, or open over a T-shirt with jeans. Brown and black are the easiest colours to start with.

Black Leather Shirt

The black leather shirt is the sharpest choice for evenings, gigs and dinners. In cowhide it is a little heavier and sits more like an overshirt; in sheepskin or lambskin it is softer and closer-fitting.

Slim-Fit or Dress Leather Shirt

A slimmer cut in soft sheepskin, made to be tucked in and worn with tailored trousers. It is the leather shirt to choose for smart-casual events and evenings out.

Western Leather Shirt

Pointed yokes across the chest and back, snap buttons and sometimes fringe or piping. Wear it with straight jeans and boots, and keep the rest of the outfit plain.

Suede Shirt

Suede has a soft, brushed surface that looks more relaxed than smooth leather. A brown or tan suede shirt works over a white T-shirt with chinos or jeans. Suede marks more easily in rain, so keep it for dry days; our suede guide explains why.

Suede Shirt Jacket and Overshirt

Cut a little larger and longer, with bigger pockets, so it can be worn open over a shirt or knit as a light jacket. This is the in-between piece for spring and early autumn.

Short-Sleeve Leather Shirt

A short-sleeve or Cuban-collar leather shirt is the warm-weather option, best for evenings and holidays. Wear it open over a vest or T-shirt with light trousers.

Perforated Leather Shirt

Small holes punched through the leather let air through, which makes it more comfortable on warmer days than solid leather.

Leather T-Shirt

A leather T-shirt is a T-shirt cut from thin lambskin, with a crew or V neck. It is a strong statement piece, best on its own under a blazer or with black jeans for a night out.

Which Leather Is Best for a Shirt?

Leather Feel Best for
Lambskin The softest and lightest; smooth, fine grain Slim and dress shirts, leather T-shirts
Sheepskin Soft, slightly fuller than lambskin Everyday button-downs and slim shirts
Suede Brushed, velvety surface; relaxed look Casual shirts and overshirts
Goatskin Soft with a light pebbled grain; a little tougher Western and work-style shirts
Cowhide Heavier and firmer Overshirts and shirt jackets

For a first leather shirt, soft lambskin or sheepskin is the most comfortable. Our lambskin guide and types of leather guide explain the differences in more detail. A "soft leather shirt" or "designer leather shirt" is usually lambskin or fine sheepskin with an aniline or nappa finish.

How Should a Men's Leather Shirt Fit?

  • Shoulders: the seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone, not hanging over it.
  • Chest: no pulling across the buttons when you sit or reach forward.
  • Sleeves: ending at the wrist bone, so the cuff doesn't cover your hand.
  • Length: long enough to tuck in, or to finish around mid-zip on your jeans if you wear it untucked.
  • Room: leather stretches only a little, so allow enough room for a T-shirt underneath. If you are between sizes, choose the larger one or order a custom size.

Our size guide shows how to measure.

How to Wear a Men's Leather Shirt

  • Casual: open brown or suede shirt over a white T-shirt, straight jeans and boots or white trainers.
  • Smart casual: black or brown shirt buttoned and tucked into wool or chino trousers, with a belt and loafers or Chelsea boots.
  • Night out: black leather shirt with black jeans and boots, or a leather T-shirt under a dark blazer.
  • Layered: suede overshirt over a knit or hoodie, or a leather shirt under a wool coat in autumn.
  • Western: western leather shirt with straight blue jeans and boots.
  • Summer evening: short-sleeve or perforated shirt with light trousers and loafers.

Keep it to one leather piece in the outfit unless you want a strong look; leather trousers and a leather shirt together are a fashion statement rather than everyday wear. Our guide on how to wear a leather jacket for men covers colours and shoes in more detail.

How to Care for a Leather Shirt

  • Wear a T-shirt or vest underneath; it keeps sweat and body oils off the leather.
  • Air it out after wearing, then hang it on a wide hanger. Don't store it in plastic.
  • Wipe smooth leather with a soft, slightly damp cloth; use a suede brush on suede.
  • Condition smooth leather a few times a year. Shirt leather is thin and can dry out faster than a jacket.
  • Never put a leather shirt in a washing machine or a normal dry cleaner. Use a leather specialist for deep cleaning.
  • If it gets wet, blot it and let it dry at room temperature, away from heaters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are leather shirts in style for men?

Yes. Leather shirts and suede overshirts are a regular part of men's collections, especially in brown, black and suede. A simple cut looks current; heavy decoration looks dated.

Is a leather shirt hot to wear?

It is warmer than a cotton shirt. Most are comfortable on mild days, roughly 15 to 22°C (59 to 72°F). For warmer weather, choose a short-sleeve or perforated shirt.

Can you wear a leather shirt as a jacket?

Yes, worn open over a T-shirt on mild days. Overshirts and shirt jackets are cut for exactly that.

Should a leather shirt be tight?

No. It should be close-fitting but leave room for a T-shirt underneath and for you to move your arms.

Can you wear a leather shirt to work?

In a smart-casual workplace, yes: a black or brown shirt tucked into tailored trousers, with no heavy hardware.

What colour leather shirt should I buy first?

Dark brown or black. Both go with jeans, chinos and dark trousers.

Can you wash a leather shirt?

No. Water and detergent damage leather. Wipe it clean and use a leather specialist for a deep clean.

Can I order a custom leather shirt?

Yes. Every shirt is made to order, and you can ask for a custom size, colour, leather type or lining. Send us the product link and the changes you want.
